Staples, the world’s largest office products company, announced their new corporate strategy this week which will drive sustainability innovation in product manufacturing, packaging and distribution. In the strategy, called “Race to the Top”, Staples challenges its suppliers to compete not only on cost but also in finding innovative, creative solutions to reduce negative impacts on the planet.

Staples is just one of a number of multinational organizations to recently announce their intentions to focus on stocking products with sustainable packaging. Proctor and Gamble this month announced their long-term environmental sustainability vision that includes 100 percent renewable energy powering their plants, zero consumer or manufacturing waste in landfills, and products from 100 percent renewable or recycled materials.

This is great news for the sustainable packaging industry, and the world as a whole. Governments, multinational corporations, and individual consumers are all championing the importance of environmentally sustainable products, and packaging for those products. Pakit will continue to provide revolutionary, innovative solutions to packaging to enable this to happen.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used to make some hard plastic containers and toys, has been declared a toxic substance by Canadian authorities, CBC recently reported. The federal government has now added BPA to Canada’s toxic substances list on Wednesday.

Statistics Canada reported in August that measurable levels of BPA were found in the urine of 91 percent of Canadians aged six to 79.

“Health Canada considers that sufficient evidence relating to human health has been presented to justify the conclusion that bisphenol A is harmful to human life and should be added to Schedule 1 of [the Canadian Environmental Protection Act],” the federal government reported in the Canada Gazette.

You can read the full article about the announcement here. This is yet another reason for Canadian consumers, businesses and governments alike to look into packaging alternatives such as moulded board that environmentally friendly and also safe for humans.
